Went to the doctor yesterday to discuss bloodwork and set up a CT scan for the holidays (don't ask.) Greg looked tired and told me he was changing to the Optimus medical group, inconveniently located (for me) on Market near 4th. Drat -- just did the work of transferring files and setting up the relationship. Not sure what to do.

The numbers of interest:

BUN: 29, (normal < 25) - I eat a bit more protein than my kidneys like.
Total Cholesterol: 146 (< 200 is good)
HDL Cholesterol: 40 (> 40 is good) - usually I fail this one slightly
LDL Cholesterol: 95 (< 100 is good)
VLDL: 11 (< 30 is good)
Triglycerides: 55 (< 150 is good)

All in all, decent and protective against heart disease, which kills most of my male relatives in their 50s. No need for nasty drugs to control blood pressure or cholesterol (attention [livejournal.com profile] zzbear.)

Not that hard: 1.5 hours a day of weightlifting and cardio exercise, constant walking up steep hills, a diet rich in salmon and fiber, and supplements ranging from fish oil to Vitamin D to resveratrol....

Not to mention the constant flow of testosterone that keeps you young. (pinching cheek)

Reading your lifestyle description made me instantly think, "that sounds like the kind of activity and diet a man was designed to have." Good on ye. It makes me want to get to a PCP, whom I've not seen since I last had health care coverage.

The automation of standard blood tests is such that it should be possible to get results for a few dollars from a drugstore machine. But the system doesn't allow that, just like it wants you to pay $200 to see the doctor so you can spend $5 on a Viagra tablet worth $0.30.

And Michael Harbour is no longer practicing either - he's now head of HIV reseach for Merck or something like that. Totally sucks - first doctor I've ever liked my whole life and I have him like 4 months.

Yeah, we heard. Good that he's moving up to something exciting, bad for Paul.

Good numbers!

I still remember the first time my current doctor got blood test results for me... he was in complete disbelief over my cholesterol total (HDL+LDL) being under 90. Vegetarianism does wonders. Not that this helps with my blood pressure...

We eat beef for dinner about twice a week, pork once; eliminating those would help just a little. But we like meat too much to give it up. Getting enough protein without it would be an effort.
