I've been reading The Arabian Nights: A Companion by Robert Irwin, which is a scholarly annotation and background for the story book. The front cover is a painting by Ludwig Deutsch, one of the school of Orientalist painters which reached a height of commercial success around 1900. As often happens, their painting style went out of fashion and these works could be had at very low prices during the heyday of nonrepresentational art. They are being reappreciated now, much as Norman Rockwell is now a subject for serious shows. Will Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light ever be rehabilitated into a subject for PhD art students in 2100? Doubtful.

Here's another fabulous Deutsch from the Orientalist Art web site:

I disagree. Art is what you make of it.

I can see it at BYU or a similar university. Kinkade claims that his style was inspired by certain verses from Psalms. It kind of makes your flesh crawl to think that this is what Divine Light will look like if you ever see it, huh?

I'm not sure what it is, but this reminds me of a brighter Caravaggio.

I became reacquainted with Orientalist paintings two years ago when looking online for a pic to steal doing research to illustrate a Slave Auction I was organizing for Great Lakes Leather Alliance.

I considered The Slave Market and Slave Auction by Jean-Leon Gerome a better representation for this pansexual event that stock fetish illustrations.

Ok, first of all, we say Asianist, not Orientalist.

B, Thomas Kincaid is a wonderful artist whose talents far surpass anything I ever saw in a second-grade art class for blind children.
