Guest caller
Jun. 23rd, 2005 12:03 pmLast night we went to ECR's club night (now that the class has graduated, we hold a club night instead.) My mother came along, since she wanted to see the exotic square dancing. The last time she did any was about 50 years ago, with a boyfriend whose family was into it. She watched from the sidelines and seemed to have a good time; Paul introduced her to everyone from the stage and she got a big hand for being interested enough to come. I found it a bit embarrassing, with the same "the other kids will think she's uncool and mess up my image!" one might have had at 13.
cjsmith was our guest caller, and she did a fine job. I explained to my mother that she was not so much known for her vocals as her technical calling skills, and it was too bad she couldn't hear Andy's mellifluous singing calls, but CJ managed to sing well for most of the evening. She got a big hand for coming out to help us, since it's generally known she's been having trouble getting around lately. The club broke up early to raid a Silicon Valley straight club to steal the Buckskin, a trophy which passes from club to club to generate interest in cross-club attendance. The general idea was to snarf the damn thing and have it in time for Convention opening dance, which is free and open to everyone.
