I took my partner Mike to the San Jose Sharks game Thursday night as a birthday present. His birthday (58th!) is really Sunday, but these were the best seats I could find. He was excited -- he's been a big sports fan since his heterosexual days. I guess 20+ years of being a straight family guy and youth soccer coach is hard to give up. I can take or leave sports -- I tend to like competition over things that matter.

I've never seen hockey live. The thud of bodies impacting the rink walls was kind of exciting. No lockerroom passes, alas, and the padded clothes tend to disguise the hunks inside. One wonders what new fans could be reached with skimpy Spandex outfits, or even nude hockey. But then injuries would be troublesome....

Scott McNealy, Chair, President, and CEO of Sun, arrived shortly after we did and was sitting about 7 rows below us. I wondered if perhaps Mike should introduce himself and note that he was laid off last year, but that would be rude... especially since he went from $3 billion on paper to a mere $300 million now. Poor guy, he seemed untroubled for someone who lost $2.7 billion! The suffering boggles. He's the one highlighted:

Live hockey is great. Now if only the Sharks were playing better, like they were playing a couple of years ago. C'est la vie.

After a truly sucky start they have done well -- leading their division. I miss Owen Nolan, of course. [sob sob]

Hockey can be very exciting. I've never seen a live game, but long ago I used to watch it pretty regularly. The fistfights and the thud of bodies against the glass made it a visceral experience. If it ever comes to hockey in spandex singlets or in just jocks or even nude, then yes, I would buy season tickets. But then, the same goes for soccer, lacrosse, gymnastics, and wrestling.

Poor Scott McNealy. I think you were right to not go bother him. If things keep sliding, before you know it, he'll be parking your car for you—and you don't want to be uncharitable in public.
