Grim weather this weekend as the jet stream aimed a series of drizzly storms at us which rightfully should be up in the Northwest. Our windows had just been washed after the exterior cedar got stained, with the expensive scaffolding still up; now they're dirty again, and it's unlikely we'll see any more rain through the summer. The builder's guys were able to fix the clanging vent damper problems, though, so that has made it more peaceful.

We're still a little tired from the travel of previous weeks, so didn't schedule too much. We had wanted to go to ECR's dance Saturday, but the weather and our decision to go to Midnight Square's A/C1 dance the next weekend tipped the balance. So instead we went to the gym late, where I got in trouble as we were leaving for stopping to talk to a guy I had met the day before over at Market; Paul was waiting and the guy went on and on without giving me a chance to gracefully exit. Of course he was nice to look at....

Over the weekend we finished watching The Women, (not the apparently-awful remake but the original), which is one of the few Gay 101 movies Paul has seen but I haven't. I've never made it through because, frankly, parts of it are very, very slow for modern tastes. Maybe soon we'll get around to seeing the somehwta similar Sex in the City movie which has been hanging out on our Tivo for a few weeks.

Sunday -- gloomy, foggy most of the day. We got the the gym early enough to get in most of the usual two hour workout before leaving for the Bare Chest Calendar finals nearby at the DNA Lounge (run by MIT grad [livejournal.com profile] jwz.) At the gym, I noticed Bevan Dufty working out nearby -- a bit out of place as a late-middle-aged, not-very-worked-out guy amongst the beef. Since he's our Supe (SF slang for Supervisor, SF's term for City Councillor), I introduced myself at an opportune time, since I was planning to attend Jose Cisnero's fundraiser the next day and expected to run into him there anyway. He didn't remember corresponding with me via email six months ago, but we had a nice conversation about Jose (one of the C Entry class of '78, 12 of us on a floor at MIT's MacGregor House.) I hadn't realized Jose was his daughter's godfather or that there were as good friends as they are.

Then it was off to the DNA Lounge. The place is smaller than I remembered, but the attendance was just about right for it; maybe 200-300 people. We voted with our tickets upstairs and I bought some more lottery tickets for the other guys I had promised I would vote for. I wasn't too surprised when Bevan and Jose turned up -- they spent about 20 minutes there before moving on to another event, so I had a longer conversation with Jose than I've had in years about his upcoming campaign for re-election. Our French friend Freddie turned up, and I pointed out this was the point of maximum leverage to get contestants to quo for your quid, so he should take advantage. One of the candidates (Marc Sondersen) had handed out candy suckers, and I later caught Freddie harassing poor Paul by his erotic sucking of same. Rescued Paul, caught up with some friends, had another contestant I didn't recognize remind me that we had chatted online a lot and when were we going to get together, and generally had fun socializing. It was interesting meeting Ronnie Rozenberg's 20-yo daughter who came out to support him. The MC was Thom Grant, who did a great job even though I still have no idea who he is.

We got there at 5:15 and lasted until 8:00, when hunger and our age (standing up for several hours no longer works!) caught up with us So I have no idea who won or how late it went (I am told 11:30 would be typical.) It's a good thing I didn't decide to be a contestant, because I just don't have the stamina or the ability to stand up in front of a crowd and make pageant speeches required.

Jose's having a fundraiser at Lime on Market at 5:30 today, so I may drop in and contribute a bit. I don't have any reason or desire to get involved in local politics, (though I'd make a pretty good Planning Commission person) so I won't stay long; people in politics tend to have more patience than I do. Suffering fools is not my forte.

If it's snappy dialogue you want, then you want "His Girl Friday." But I have to agree: "The Women" has very generous pacing. I enjoy it when I'm in the mood for ... well, I was going to say "when I'm in the mood for women," but that hardly ever happens. When I'm in the mood for that particular style of film.
