The flooring guys are about half done; they'll be here until Tuesday at least. We won't make San Jose Pride (or any other social obligation) until this is over. Every day we move a room or two of furniture -- this morning we dismantled my bedroom, so I currently have nowhere to sleep. There are lots of details about how to handle edges with tile, windows, baseboards, and closets that have to be decided, so it helps that we're here. It would not have worked well if we had been gone; I've heard people say "just go on vacation and when you come back it'll be done!" Well, something would have been done, but in many cases not the right thing.

The living room really looks great with the bamboo floor, though.

Why didn't we just move? It's easier... :-)

Because you really, really, really like your Eichler house. ;-)

Good point.

Actually I was hinting I needed a place to sleep tonight, but nobody took the bait. :(

Oh well. So, what did you do?

Tonight I will sleep with my partner for the first time in a year. The reason I moved off to my own bedroom, of course, was extreme snoring. :-)

Earplugs weren't enough.

Snoring, yikes

Well, I *do* have one advantage, that is I only have one good ear and can simply roll over and cover it up with the pillow, however, the pillow doesn't work with the secondary alarm of my clock radio. :-)

Bamboo Flooring

What are the advantages of bamboo as a flooring? Strength and quiet? A few years ago, I stayed in a high-class, environmentally award-winning hotel in Philly during its pre-opening phase. They used bamboo inside the walls as sound-proofing. My company of "Evita", as first guests, was greeted by mice as they burrowed into the walls to dine... a side effect of this use of bamboo and very funny in hindsight:)

You can see one brand's claims here: http://www.bamtex.com/bamtexfloors.htm.

It's pieces compressed and epoxied together to create a solid wood that's harder than most hardwoods and looks like maple, except you can see the joints of the bamboo in it instead of typical woodgrain.

The advantages: eco-friendly (quickly renewing source), cheaper (than hardwoods, Chinese sourced); very "cool" and smooth looking. Since it's solid, unlike typical engineered hardwood flooring, you can sand it down and refinish just like regular hardwood floors.

I don't think ours will attract mice. It's not very edible. :-)

Had I known, you both could have stayed at my house while I'm gone. How did today go?

Puzzling, since the comment reaches me via email :-)

Thanks for the compliment of wanting my comments, but because of the flooring project I won't have time to read and thoughtfully comment. We've been moving things around all weekend, and this office is about to be empited -- actually everything but the computers is already gone. Shutting down and won't be back on for a day or two.

Sorry. I'm sure it's good.
