drscott: (ECR)
Mike needed to talk to his bf, so I went to ECR class night by myself. Talked to [livejournal.com profile] handlebear for a bit -- there's more of him now that the doctors are actually encouraging him to gain weight. [livejournal.com profile] nanocub looked alert for once. One of my gym friends showed up after I left and apparently enjoyed all the attention he got.

I danced one tip then got involved in an investment conversation. We edged toward the door and spoke as quietly as possible. And then the topic of why we were being so careful came up...

When I ran for the board (and lost) I promoted my hobbyhorse, which is the need to acknowledge and encourage social interaction and promote the club for people who aren't as motivated to go uplevel as quickly as possible. I knew Harlan's expectation that all angels should dance all the time would cause trouble; he has expressed the opinion that any angels hanging around should form a new square even if it isn't necessary to get all the students in. There has since been pressure to do so. I am less likely to come now and I suspect others will feel the same. We need to establish that it's okay to speak *softly* or outside (for those who can't or won't) and that nondancing angels who stay outside for talk won't get harassed. Not everyone is in either physical or mental shape to dance all or most tips.

We are essentially the only place for socializing for our group down here. Harlan is used to the city where, if you wanted to hang out with a nice group, you have dozens of alternatives. We don't have that and should strive to both provide a good class environment *and* a socializing area for club members during class. It would be different if we also had a club night, but then it might be hard to get enough angels for class nights.
