I took my partner Mike to the San Jose Sharks game Thursday night as a birthday present. His birthday (58th!) is really Sunday, but these were the best seats I could find. He was excited -- he's been a big sports fan since his heterosexual days. I guess 20+ years of being a straight family guy and youth soccer coach is hard to give up. I can take or leave sports -- I tend to like competition over things that matter.

I've never seen hockey live. The thud of bodies impacting the rink walls was kind of exciting. No lockerroom passes, alas, and the padded clothes tend to disguise the hunks inside. One wonders what new fans could be reached with skimpy Spandex outfits, or even nude hockey. But then injuries would be troublesome....Read More )

The ex

When I met my ex, I was a junior at MIT. We checked coats for a gay dance together, and he was very handsome and intelligent... but it took him three more tries to ask me over to his place. He was an assistant prof. at BC at the time, but shortly after we moved in together (and I left school for what turned out to be six years) his contract was unrenewed. He did some postdoc work to make ends meet, then finally got a job at Polaroid doing film chemistry. He's worked at Polaroid for over 20 years now, even surviving the recent bankruptcy and downsizing. Today I got an email from him asking for advice on how to invest his 401K.Read More )
