Network outage

Storm damage has affected the power supplies at my hosting company, so I'm not getting any email related to LJ. If you need to get hold of me, use an alternate address.

New Orleans is sinking beneath the waters of Lake Pontchartrain and the state government is evacuating the remaining population. This WaPo article has the clearest description of the problem and some nice topo maps.

This would be a good time to move much of the city to higher ground, since structures that have been underwater for weeks are likely to be total losses. Fortunately the flooding has been slow enough for most people to escape with their lives.

If I am reading the maps right, it looks like French quarter is only going to get minor flooding, so that is a small bit of good news in terms of preserving some of the historical parts of the city.

I can't believe how much water other parts of the city are going to be covered in.
