On Friday we transferred title on half the house to Paul. Mike came over and we journeyed to the nearby UPS Store where there is supposed to be a notary on duty; alas, no notary would be available until much later. So it was back to the house to look up another on the web. Then off to the substitute, which was at a mailing center next to the Pasta Pomodoro in the Cherry Orchard Center. The older Indian gentleman was coughing his lungs out and had to adjourn to cough something up in mid-notarizing. Finally I had a notarized quitclaim deed in my hot little hands and parted ways with Mike.

Changed clothes (it helps to look semi-respectable at a bureaucrat's counter.) I wore the light blue button-down Oxford-cloth shirt I had worn to work back in 1986; while the cuffs are frayed and the elbows are worn paper-thin, it still is the most comfortable conforming-geek shirt I have. The Santa Clara County Courthouse is north of downtown San Jose and I'd never been there; found the building, parked, entered by the DA's office and passed a lot of law enforcement types before reaching the civil end of the building. Waited in a short line behind a courier, presumably for a title service, whose stack of files made my single-sheet deed look rather sad. The courier looked like a more muscular version of our Josh (aka [livejournal.com profile] enhydrasf) -- sexy, dark, cargo shorts, muscular calves, stubble. Didn't mind waiting too much as a result. Finally got to a window and threw myself at the mercy of the clerk (generally wise, they tend to be more helpful if you admit incompetence immediately instead of wasting their time proving it!) She wanted to waive the fees since it was a transaction relating to the end of a domestic partnership, but I wouldn't let her since I knew it was no longer an official D.P. and in any case such a waiver is only available if the dissolution is in writing as part of or anticipating a court-ordered judgment. It turns out Sunnyvale levies no additional tax on transfers, so it was $200-odd instead of the $1,000 it might have been in a town like Palo Alto. I await with some trepidation the verdict of the assessor on the new tax bill... argh.

Friday night went over to John and Mark's for drinks and dinner. I'm getting used to Cosmos. Meanwhile, Paul is drinking much less to meet me halfway.

The rest of the weekend was spent getting the last things out of Paul's house and starting the long process of putting things away here; Sunday we managed to combine most of our kitchen goods. Paul admitted he has "issues" with collecting high-end kitchen utensils; indeed, he has enough for three kitchens. I disposed of a lot of mine which look rather sad by comparison, and the Goodwill pile grew to include enough to stock another full kitchen. I made spicy scrambled eggs Saturday and tried to do pancakes Sunday, but between the Butter Buds, the sugar-free syrup, and the 4-year-old Bisquick base which apparently had lost its ability to rise, they were pale imitations of the real thing.

I'm not paying much attention to LJ and won't have time to participate in much of anything for awhile.

I'll just have to work harder at getting to know Paul and you better. Gasp! I might even have to call or write regular email:) I'm glad things are getting resolved and evolving nicely. See you on Saturday night! Hugs!

Yeah, what [livejournal.com profile] greatbearmd said.

I'm really glad you guys got together. I mean, I've never met either one of you, and reading about the growth of your relationship STILL makes me smile.

I said something similar to Paul in his journal as well but worth repeating here.

In this country with fear, hate and attempted oppression going on, it's so nice to see two people fall in love and combine homes and be happy.

That's the way it should be, right?

Good luck with the settling in 'n stuff. :-)

It sounds like you two have made a good foundation of a start.
