Well, I already have a website (http://www.smxwl.com) and a journal for supposedly serious commentary. But a lot of generally disorganized happenings and social minutiae never gets written down, so since so many of my friends are already here committing egregious acts of self-revelation, I might as well make a fool of myself for posterity like everyone else. Peer pressure, y'know.

Since I'm married (to the fine Mike) and live in the 'burbs (Sunnyvale), I don't get out much. I used to enjoy talk bars, but since settling down here and getting into my 40s, I don't have as much stamina for shooting the breeze as I used to. My husband goes to sleep at 10 PM, and I usually stay up until midnight or later reading and background socializing on ICUii (where I'm "Dr. Scott, private therapist.") This journal will be yet another way to waste time and connect without having to dress or answer in realtime.

I square dance with El Camino Reelers (http://www.reelers.org), and it's through fellow dancer Gary aka [livejournal.com profile] fuzzygruf that I noticed LiveJournal. Thanks, Gary... I think. We'll see how well I keep up with this. One of these days I will learn to 2-step up at Sundance. Now that I've retired from the fabulously lucrative investment advisor gig, I should have time....

My latest house exploit was replacing three of the rusting steel bathroom sinks in our house. As usual what should take one day expands to take weeks as you discover missing tools, mismated parts, expired caulk, and errors in the instructions. But it looks great. One generally has to be cautious in modifying an Eichler, but the original sinks and plumbing carry none of the classic qualities of the Eichler style and so it was emotionally painless to rip out the old.

Christmas musings: I had my mother and brother come for Thanksgiving, so I was allowed to stay home with my real family for once instead of flying to KC or Tallahassee, getting a cold, recovering from that only to have that mysterious inner ear syndrome keep me dizzy for weeks, and the other sequelae I expect from "holiday travel." For Christmas dinner we had over fellow ECR friends Tom S***le and Paul P******a. We strung lights on the Norfolk Island pine brought in from the deck, cooked a turkey breast, mulled some wine (load some cheap red with cinnamon and other spices, heat it on the stove, strain out the spices -- voila, mulled wine!) and watched Whale Rider, which was a fine example of empowering multicult storytelling.

What do you all want to hear about? Hello? Hellooooo....

Wow -- onanistic!

Blogging is the latest fashion in virtual exhibitionism. I've been sucked into it too, by the likes of Cameron aka handlebear and he from Gary aka fuzzygruf and Jeff aka bowlerbehrsf. I have my doubts that I'll keep up with it, for the simple reason that I don't have much free time with my new job. But who knows...

Welcome to LJ. See you at ECR on Tuesday?

Response to Gary and Scott: why blog?

Yup, I'll be at ECR Tuesday.

Scott: the thing about blogging is audience v. content. What you'd like is to write down anything you want a record of, then have a tailored version (filtered/reordered/organized) generated for each viewer depending on who they are. Nobody has done a system that's very good at this yet. So while my Movable Type blog is fine for high-minded public stuff organized by categories, LT has a community which is more likely to be interested in the men I've run into, what I think about narcissists, my cookie recipes, and nude photography. So it makes sense to put that more personal stuff here.
