House Photos; Lamba Legal Fundraiser
Sep. 14th, 2008 12:59 pmSaturday we drove up to the city to meet Jason-the-agent at noon. He was a bit late, so we rushed through the walk-through since he had to leave for a wedding.
This made us late for the LJ picnic -- we didn't get there until 1. Not enough schmoozing time later, we left for the house again to take more measurements and photos, and show John and Mark the place. By the time they left and we finished unloading stuff and measuring, it was too late for our planned gym foray, so we went to Starbucks and had some coffee and protein drinks -- I hadn't had my usual caffeine at lunch, so I was slumping.
The Lambda Legal fundraiser was in Thao and Tyler's new condo in 1234 Howard, the recently-built Stanley Saitowitz-designed minimalist building. I had not seen the units when they were being marketed -- the largest is 1279 sq. ft., too small for us to consider. The function included the entry courtyard shared with another unit, so there was enough room for the 50 or so people who came; we got a chance to talk to Lorenzo Taylor, the HIV+ State department employee who was barred from being a Foreign Service Officer because of his status; the State Department gave up and rewrote its rules before the appeal could go to trial. Lorenzo's also a square dancer and friend of
zzbear's, and recently moved here from DC.
We were getting a bit tired out, so we left around 7 and had dinner at a Thai place nearby before heading home. Paul takes off for Santa Fe this afternoon, so I'll go to the gym by myself and have a quiet evening.
Here are some photos of the new house:

Paul vamps in the kitchen.
The agent swears the owner built it as a rental, but the very high-end detailing is hard to explain if that's the case. An AV consultant clearly did the Cat5 and sound wiring. There's shrink-wrapped WiFi router in the wiring closet along with one already installed, plus a 5-DVD changer already hooked up. There are circulator pumps on the hot water lines, which I think means it has the luxury feature of almost-instant hot water (unless the water pressure is just low in this location.) The roof deck has speakers and lighting suitable for party needs. Bosch appliances, including a motorized vent in the gas cooktop.
Things that aren't so great: the garage is just wide enough for our small cars, and has a sidways jog of several feet halfway back; it will take some care getting in and out, and exiting onto Market won't be easy. Backing into the garage, which would make it easier to get out, will be tough given the small margin for error. The city required a lightwell and side staircase from top to bottom, which made the garage too narrow.
Most of the rooms (and some ceilings!) are painted yellow. That and the green granite counters don't work for me, especially when they chose to use gray marble accents everywhere. We'll get used to it and if we're there long enough, we can repaint. I like yellow, but not *that* much.

The panorama from the master bedroom window.

Looking downtown from the roof deck. Note the speakers and lights.

Jason and Paul discuss a point.

Looking up Market from the roof deck.

Some of the controls: video front door intercom, burglar alarm, lighting....

Laundry room / pantry. More shelves needed.

Living room; dining area to right.

Looking back toward the kitchen from the living room.

Master bedroom

Master bath. Off camera to the left: whirlpool tub (which we won't use.)

I HATE YOU!!!!! *cough* **sniff** (burning with envy)But it does seem a little "small" for a studio. Perhaps, I could take it off your hands, since I am sure a view from a Pacific Heights living space is much more conducive to
Oh, and don't worry about my personal sacrifice...it truly is all about you and Paul.. *smooch* (was good seeing you both at the picnic)

Date: 2008-09-18 11:54 pm (UTC)While I am not a big fan of yellow either, at least in the public areas the (wonderful) abundant natural light 'washes out' much of its intensity.
I know I would have probably jumped on it too, given what both you and Paul have mentioned here on the other places you've encountered. The overall impression is really, really nice.
Congratulations.
