I'll be leaving for DC in two hours, chaging planes in Phoenix and arriving at Reagan/National on the "McCain flight" (so-called because the Senator had a special provision inserted in the law which otherwise prevents flights from west of the Mississippi from landing at the more convenient airport.) Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] excessor is using this as an opportunity to head for Palm Springs and some sun.

The agenda in DC includes a night out at the bear bar (Titans, if memory serves) Friday, the HRC banquet Saturday (had to check a bag because of the extra clothing and shoes for that), and a visit to suburban Virginia for the gay tennis league Sunday. The rest of the agenda is discussion.

Have a safe and fun trip; don't forget to be a little naughty too. :)

What would be the more convenient airport Dulles or Baltimore? I've never heard of the McCain deal. One can fly non-stop into IAD or BWI from San Francisco I believe. Very few long distance flights to DCA because it is a smaller airport with its runway in the middle of the Potomac.

David lives just a few miles from National/DCA, so that's why it's better to fly into there. BWI is way out unless you're going north of the city. The smallness of DCA is why flights are restricted, though why Congress should be deciding such tiny matters is a good question. That the public interest can be swayed by one or two Senators' need for convenience is typical. In our system it would be much more flexible and efficient to auction off landing and gate space, with appropriate externalities (noise at night, for example) accounted for.

Until congress turns over control of DCA/BWI/IAD to local entities, they retain the authority, right or wrong, to govern what happens there. Even if they do give up control, they can still muck up the waters as was done with the Wright amendment and Love Field in Dallas. Dulles is a nice airport, but as you know, it is anything but convenient to D.C. I'm not even sure if Metro has made it out there as of yet.

As I write this - 8:37pm on the best coast, it's 11:37pm in DC - so I imagine that all those speeches are still not over.....LOL.

"Naughty" was Friday night at Titan's, where we felt up a paleontologist from the Smithsonian who reminded me of [livejournal.com profile] nakednsf. I'm honing my ability to be trashy without getting into real trouble.

Speeches all over now -- I suppose I should post something! The glitterati here aren't all that glittery...
