Friday night we had Mark, John, and Lou C over for drinks and dinner, as covered by this post. Appetizers included chips and guacamole, Brie with lightly-toasted pine nuts, and peppered cashews. I did the cooking -- broiled salmon, broccoli, wild rice, and salad. For dessert we had pear tarts and chocolate cake from Draeger's, courtesy Mark and John. Sipped some Port, which I think is a first. Good thing we don't usually eat like this! [livejournal.com profile] excessor drank rather more than usual lately, which led to an embarrassing post invoking Olivia Newton John. I am cringing just thinking about it.

Saturday we spent our free time ring shopping. Just to get oriented, we headed to Los Altos town center to visit the 7 or so jewelers along Main Street. We learned quite a bit -- we found a great place for custom work, for example, and we looked at some Mokume-Gane work at Earthworks. While I like the idea of something custom-made, prices would be $2K and up each for the kind of platinum-gold band Paul wants. This is exactly the kind of investment in an object I don't want to make: much time, effort, and symbolic value to lose in a moment of inattention.

In the evening, we skipped the square dance in the city in favor of snuggling up at home. I had done squats that day and fell asleep on the couch around 10 PM, just as the loving was supposed to start. Disappointing, but we made up for it the next day.....

Sunday we dropped in at the Mountain View festival on Castro Street. We got there early before it got hot and crowded; lotsa bad art, but the titanium ring company we had been looking at on the web had a booth where we got to try on some of their goods. Some nice stuff, and I like the idea of a lightweight ring in something "different." Bruce R and John H came up while we were at the booth -- Bruce is the straight massage therapist who came with his wife to ECR for a few years until their recent parenthood swallowed up their free time, while John adopted a child with his partner Mark L and is similarly time-challenged as a result. They make great daddies, and I can guess what [livejournal.com profile] enhydrasf would want to do with them, strikethrough not withstanding. It was difficult to talk with them while trying to think about the rings, so I'm afraid they thought we were being standoffish.
