The tree service came by this morning. I was still waking up when the chain saws started; they had to bring a few larger limbs down on our side of the fence, in one case smashing a solar garden light, but other than that it went without incident. The bamboo and ginger plants below were unscathed. The pool is, as usual, full of sawdust and crap. Recent rains have overfilled it; I have to siphon some water out today so the skimmer will work properly to collect most of it from the surface before it falls to the floor of the pool.
I'm halfway through doing my mother's taxes. She always forgets something, but so far I haven't figured out what this year's omission is.

I'm also halfway through reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. It's a wonderful amalgam of high art and pulp fiction about high art and pulp fiction, the fictionalized story of the first generation of comic-book kings, the hetero- and homosexual impulses that drove them, Jewish folklore and Nazi bad guys, and collisions of romance and realism. If the second half is as good as the first, it's one of the better novels of the decade. The gay content (expected from Chabon, who typically has used sympathetic gay characters, e.g. in Wonder Boys and The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) is just part of the colorful scenery.
