Hot!

Friday, aside from the usual housework and gym, had Mike coming over to give me a birthday gift -- a 90 minute massage. Very nice if a bit oily. Then it was off to the gym to do arms, then home for meatloaf and salad. We watched the first episode of Firefly, which struck me as just barely good enough -- but then I'm demanding. Nothing very special about it, but a few witty lines and a certain style kept it from being mediocre.

Today we scratched [livejournal.com profile] excessor's itch for high-end shopping and went to Nordstrom at Valley Fair. It was a parking nightmare, and if I see one more car creepily shadowing a pedestrian hoping they're going to a car, I may get violent. The stores were crowded, but when we did finally reach the calmer interior of Nordstrom, I have to admit the service was excellent (they incentivize their staff) and it was pleasant to shop there. I prefer going somewhere cheap where I don't pay twice as much for atmosphere, but that's just me. [livejournal.com profile] excessor has been trained to covet, and passing various new models of luxury car and having him know not only its model number but its price is no longer a new experience. I sometimes forget how little material things interest me -- or how little I respond to status concerns -- but then I see the results of living here on many of the otherwise sane engineers and shudder. My cultural background (Scots-Irish border clans) and chosen overlay (New England Enlightenment) tend to suspect the competition for status, particularly through material display.

Back home, we spent the afternoon by the pool catching a few rays and bobbing around in the 90-degree water. The high turned out to be a record at about 93, and no cooling breeze arrived until after 5. Too hot for me, so my brain has turned off.
