Relief

Finally a perfect day after several days of excessive heat. Our guest from Holland loved it, and the pool rose from 53 to 75 degrees in three days (I turned on the solar system as well.) But that was really too hot to enjoy being in the sun; today was much better for outdoor work, so I trimmed some oleander and cleaned the pool some more. Now that the water is warm, the battle against algae begins.

Tonight's activity was ECR class. Danced a few tips as a boy and spent the rest of the time talking to the usual suspects, like [livejournal.com profile] excessor; no [livejournal.com profile] fuzzygruf in attendance, so I'll have to carry the burden of commenting on the bad dancers. Or not as the case may be, since in Plus level class few people are hopelessly awful. The worst we have are some "hesitators," people who don't have a clue about 1/3 of the time and wait to see where they should end up before moving. This works if there's only one of them in a square, but get two or more and you're in trouble. Andy lost it a few times and promised before the last tip he'd be nice this time....

The good news is that two of our members are getting married, and not leaving town as they had planned earlier. The upheaval in the Valley has been a bit of a pain even for those of us unaffected by job losses, since many of our friends have moved away or been forced to change their lives. The job situation seems to be improving daily, though, and Bennet was bouncing around cheerfully after his first weeks of employment at Google after being underemployed for two years. He said guards have been posted to check IDs of everyone entering their parking lots, since the reporters and paparazzi trying to get a scoop on the upcoming IPO have been trying to get in (not that anyone they'd talk to would be likely to know anything!)

I'm listening to the part of Beethoven's 7th Symphony used in Zardoz, an interesting B movie with Sean Connery as a primitive stud in a post-nuclear future who stirs up trouble in the effete confines of surviving technical civilization. It's a hoot.
